Primary Objective:

The Team Lead will be responsible for efficient operation of the section: work completed on time and with a high degree of accuracy; minimum wastage of consumables; efficient and timely ordering of consumables; staff morale; staff fully trained and competent for their duties.

The Team Lead has the following duties:

  • Overseeing staff within the section.
  • Maintaining an acceptable turnaround of tasks or results within the section, including meeting holding times.
  • Ensuring all duties within the section are conducted in accordance with the Quality Procedures Manual. Keeping up to date with changes in methodology within the section.
  • Prioritising the work received for the section.
  • Training and developing of section staff.
  • Ensuring accuracy of results and that QC is carried out.
  • Monitoring instrument performance and identify deviations from specification and notifying Laboratory management if the instrument is not operating to specifications, including when instrument QC fall outside control limits.
  • Maintaining documentation of samples, standards, reports and instrument/method logs.
  • Perform analytical tests as required and producing results.
  • Investigating and rectifying anomalies reported for QC and test samples.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as required.
  • Control consumable stock required for the tasks performed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Core Competencies:

  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ensuring the quality of the lab is maintained at the level that meets or exceeds the QC targets set out in the QC manual.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ensuring instrument repairs, maintenance and calibration schedules are carried out (e.g. ovens, balances etc.)
  • Assessing results of QA/QC audits and implement improvements as required.
  • Proficient computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office.
  • Must be able to initiate corrective action without prompting and assist co-workers whenever necessary in order to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to effectively perform duties under pressures arising from large sample volumes and short turn-around times.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to use (or learn to use) Laboratory Information Management System.

Occupational Health & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Follow all company operating procedures, standards, policies, and training to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the site.
  • Play an active role in the ALS safety program by correcting or reporting unsafe acts and conditions that are observed during day to day operations to create a zero-injury work environment.
  • Participate in and support HSE initiatives, as required by ALS leadership.
  • Understand and use HSE precautions (such as but not limited to fume hoods and PPE) while working with chemicals and samples of unknown hazard.

Position Requirements:

  • Associates Degree is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
  • 0–3 years of analytical laboratory experience is preferred.
